People collect all kinds of stuff; from stone and gems to bottle corks and chocolate wrapper. Collectors are usually passionate of the kind of item they collect, may it be anything under the sun.

Collecting antique postcards has become a popular hobby among most people in the past few years. However, collecting postcards is one of the oldest hobbies since postcards have been in existence for more than a century.

But antique postcards have a charm of their own. Today these postcards are worth a lot of money. Antique postcard collectors take a lot of pride in their collection because some of them are really rare. And some may be from places that don’t even exist anymore.

Antique postcards can have images of historic places, landmarks, Seven Wonders of the World, sports stadiums, old cars, trains, famous personalities and events and even expositions.

Most of the layouts and designs of antique postcards have almost disappeared which makes them even more valuable. Serious collectors of old postcards store and display their collection in a systematic and attractive way. But it’s important to take care while displaying or storing these postcards or else it may cause permanent damage to these old masterpieces.

Collectors should take utmost care while preserving old postcards and make sure there is no damaged caused to them due to the environment or rough handling. They should never be exposed to chemicals which may scar the postcards for ever.

Antique postcards must always be stored in albums or holders which are of a larger size than the postcards to ensure that the corners of postcards are not creased, bent or damages. Avoid placing the corners of the postcards under hinges. This can tear the corners of the postcards.

The albums or holders of postcards should by of good quality so that they can protect the postcards from rough handling. Make sure that the materials of the album or holder do not contain any damaging chemicals that may react with the antique postcards causing permanent damage.

Such damaging chemicals may discolor or fade the postcard. The chemical reaction can also continue even after the postcard is taken out of the album or holder. Also the climate and temperature plays an important role while storing old postcards. Postcards should not be exposed to excess heat or humidity. Always store postcards in cool and dry places and keep replacing the album in every 50 years to avoid deterioration.
